Styling a Trench Coat for Fall, 2024 Edition
Share
Fall embodies a multitude of fashion moods. Fall is "boot season", it is "scarf season", and among other things, Fall is also "layer season". And when it comes to layering outfits during Fall and especially during the Summer-to-Fall transitional period, a trench coat is the perfect choice for classic and effortless style. Trench coats have evolved from mostly being raincoats to now being a staple piece for transitional weather, think early Spring and early Fall. The classic trench coat features a midi length, a structured khaki material, and a double-breasted button closure. Over the years however, the color palette for trench coats has expanded from neutral khaki to bold hues such as red and yellow. And more recently, trench coats have undergone even more fashionable updates including a shorter length. From midi, we now have cropped trench coats that are easy to layer and lend a contemporary vibe to Fall fashion. I love a trench coat, long or short and in the rest of this post, I'm sharing different ways to style a trench coat during this time of the year, early Fall that is.
Midi Trench Coat with Denim Dress
Denim dresses have renewed their staple status thanks to classic and modern updates such as midi to maxi lengths, shirt-dress silhouettes, and more ample fits. Those changes make denim dresses a fashionable choice for Fall and one that plays well with the weather too given denim's substantial feel. To dial up the cozy factor, I topped my blue denim shirtdress with a neutral beige trench coat and knee-high suede boots. This elevated casual fit works well as a transitional Fall combo and brings a good dose of style to off-hours feats.
Midi Trench Coat with Jogger Pants
When you want to strike an alluring balance between sporty chic and business casual, look no further than a khaki pair of joggers with an oversized striped button-down shirt, pointy kitten heels, and a trench coat. This look is easy to assemble and a snazzy option for weekends and office days alike.

Another spin on the joggers-and-trench combo is to tuck in a striped shirt and go for boots. Boots are a Fall staple and pairing them with a trench coat is a surefire way to give a look all kinds of Fall vibes.
Midi Trench Coat with Wide-Leg Jeans
Wide-leg jeans are always a good idea in my book and an item I frequently reach for for casual dressing. For this outfit, I also went for a striped shirt. Obviously I have a weakness for those and the fun fact is that the striped shirts featured in this look and those above are all different! Color-wise I find that denim blue and khaki beige make a classic match hence my beige trench coat and accessories. You could swap the sandals for boots if that's more your vibe but I'll argue there's still a little bit of time left for open strappy shoes!
Midi Trench Coat with Blue Jeans
There are many ways to spin a blue jeans and trench coat combo. In the previous look, I opted for wide-leg jeans for more of a relaxed vibe. For this look, I went for ankle straight-leg jeans that I paired with the same trench coat as earlier, but buttoned up and cinched for a more polished style. To give it a sporty vibe, you could swap the pointed-toe boots for a pair of lifestyle sneakers.
Cropped Trench Coat with Wide-Leg Pants
Fall's usually the time to go for length however a little cropped action can make quite the fashion difference during this season. Case in point: this cropped trench coat. It's the perfect layering piece over long, wide-leg pants as it brings visual balance to the look. For this outfit, I was going for a modern business professional vibe hence the white button-down shirt, wide leather belt, and large leather tote.
These outfits showcase just how versatile and indispensable a trench coat is to a Fall wardrobe. Whether you prefer it in a midi length or cropped style, a trench coat in a neutral hue is sure to impart a sophisticated allure to your transitional Fall style. Which look did you like the most and do you consider trench coats to be a closet staple? Chime in the comments!
