My Signature Style Is Modern Classic — Here's Where I Shop in Minneapolis

If you've been following me, you've probably noticed that my style lives at the intersection of timeless tailoring and contemporary edge. An easy way to put it is modern classic. I love clean lines, elevated basics, and pieces that move effortlessly from coffee meetups to a corporate office. And achieving such a wardrobe takes a little leg work finding places and brands that understand this assignment. I've lived in the Twin Cities for over two decades, and though it's miles away from the cities we typically associate with high fashion such as New York City, Minneapolis-Saint Paul has a lot to offer when it comes to fashion shopping. In fact, the Twin Cities are full of hidden gems and mainstream brand chains that deliver some good, modern style. Here are 5 go-to spots that I like to visit for curating my timeless yet contemporary wardrobe.

1. Aritzia at The Mall of America

Aritzia is my go-to for elevated essentials that transcend trends. Their assortment is full of high quality, tailored pieces that feel both current and enduring. From structured trousers to polished knitwear and modern blazers, everything seems designed for longevity and achieving that effortless chic vibe. Another selling point for me as a tall person who needs that extra length with my pants is that Aritzia carries tall pants, though not at the store. The staff is friendly and always willing to help with ordering any items that they may not carry at the store. Recently, I purchased these straight-leg black dress pants and the matching high-neck blazer. The cut, the fit, the material on these pieces is chef's kiss and I know I'll be able to rock these for years to come.

2. Macy's at the Southdale Center

Macy's has been steadily stepping up their contemporary fashion game and I'm here for it! Their newer lines such as On 34th and And Now This, as well as their more established in-house brands such as INC International Concepts, have been serving fashion-forward pieces that rival Zara's and H&M's line-up. This Fall, the INC line has delivered jackets in modern biker silhouettes and season-perfect hues, and slip skirts that fit like a dream, among other things. The On 34th brand has a generous range of upgraded staples such as fashionable denim shirts and cozy and striped knit sweaters in on-trend cuts. There's definitely no shortage of options when it comes to Macy's Fall and seasonal fashion offerings, and I love that the price point feels attainable, especially if you can take advantage of the regular store promos. I recently purchased this striped sweater, this satin bomber jacket, and am seriously considering this denim shirt. I spotted it on a mannequin, tried it on, and was very pleased with the quality and fit. And that's the thing, even though online shopping continues to gain ground, there's something about being able to see a product in real life, touch it, try it on, and be a little more certain about your buying decision.

3. Marc Jacobs at the Southdale Center

Have you been to Southdale lately? That mall has been undergoing some major renovations that have lifted its vibe and provide such a fresh shopping experience! One of the changes I appreciate the most is just how clear the mall atrium is. The first floor main area used to be filled with all kinds of kiosks, giving it a cluttered appearance, but now, walking on that first floor feels super relaxing and makes the whole experience so much more elevated. And speaking of elevated, another change that I am absolutely elated about is the addition of a luxury wing featuring high-end brands we've all turned to to perk up our wardrobes. One of those luxury stores is Marc Jacobs. While the brand is mostly revered for its high-fashion handbags and accessories, this location goes beyond the basics and actually offers the entire gamut of Marc Jacobs, including ready-to-wear clothing, fragrances and shoes. The staff is welcoming and good at showcasing the new stuff. And again, when it comes to shopping especially high-end purchases, nothing beats a store experience where you can interact with the product, ask questions to the sales associates, and make informed buying decisions.

4. Loft at Ridgedale Center

Loft might not be the first place that comes to mind when you're hunting for trendy fashion, but don't sleep on it. This store is always hiding a few basic-yet-fashionable gems, think quality linen vests and cotton tank tops in the Summer, and structured jackets in the Fall and Winter. And the cherry on top? The price point is attainable, making refreshing your wradrobe feel like a real treat. Recently, I purchased this fringe faux suede jacket at the store and am so happy with it! It's one of those pieces I had seen on the website but didn't give much attention to it until I got to see it in real life at the store, and try it on. The length is tall-girl-friendly, the material feels so smooth and durable, and the fringes add that seasonal trendy element that takes a look up a few notches.

Shopping at a store can be a hassle if the store isn't staffed properly or if the sales people don't provide proper assistance. I like that this location always has folks ready to greet you, tell you about the ongoing promos, start a fitting room for you so you don't have to haul all those picks around, and also how they check in while you're trying on the clothes. I definitely recommend this store for building the foundation of a modern wardrobe.

5. Saks Off 5th at the Eagan Outlet Mall

Saks Off 5th in Eagan is one of those places I love to browse when I'm in the mood for leisurely shopping, that is when I'm not looking for anything specific yet hoping to stumble on the perfect piece to add to my wardrobe. I especially love to stop by in the Fall and Winter to check out the knit selection. I've purchased a number of good quality sweaters and jackets at this location, and at very good prices, the kind that don't come with guilt or buyer's remorse! Whether you're looking for some easy knitwear or going for some designer find, a trip to the Saks outlet store is sure to be worth your while. On top of the knitwear, I've also purchased some snazzy jewelry and sunglasses, again at outlet prices that make the buying decision a little easier. This place is great to check out when you're feeling adventurous with shopping. And the Eagan outlet mall in general is a great place for treasure hunting with shops like the Banana Republic Factory store, Ralph Lauren, and Kate Spade.
