5+ White Dress Outfit Ideas for the Summer

5+ White Dress Outfit Ideas for the Summer

It's not Summer until you've sported a white dress! Summer has become synonymous with being the season for dresses, and that is especially true for white dresses. As the weather gets warmer, lighter and brighter colors take center stage. This change is not just driven by trends, but it also has a scientific reason behind it. In fact, white reflects the sunrays rather than absorbing them like black does. This means that white clothing is the better option for keeping cool in hot weather. So it makes sense that white dresses be considered by a lot of us a Summer wardrobe staple.

White dresses come in many different styles and materials, and can be worn for casual feats as well as formal occasions. From eyelet cotton to linen, and maxi dresses to midi dresses and even mini dresses, you're sure to find a white dress that suits your sartorial preferences and checks your style needs. Here are some Summer outfits featuring white dresses to inspire you to build this staple into your seasonal wardrobe.

1. A White Eyelet Maxi Dress

Maxi dresses exude both a classy and trendy vibe, making them a versatile choice along the entire fashion spectrum. This white maxi eyelet dress is breathable and comes with a flirty off-shoulder neckline and tiered skirt. I like to wear eyelet for casual outdoor events as a picnic dress outfit, or a day-at-the-beach dress outfit, or even a comfortable lunch-on-the-patio dress outfit. For this look, I styled the dress with a wide natural raffia belt, raffia flat slides, and a large straw tote. This is a casual yet sophisticated dress outfit that is appropriate for a variety of settings.

2. A White Linen Halter Dress

I love linen anything, from pants to shirts to blazers and dresses. Linen is a light and comfortable fabric that is practical for the hot season. It is also a sustainable fabric, more so than cotton, making it a great choice for an environment-friendly lifestyle. This white midi linen dress is the way to go for a chic and effortless Summer outfit. I love that it comes with an assorted sash belt for a polished touch. I also love the halter design which creates a flattering silhouette by accentuating the shoulders and drawing attention to the neckline and collarbones.

I styled this Mango dress with a large black leather tote and my new Steve Madden studded pointed flats for a relaxed yet edgy weekend look. This halter dress can also be paired with sneakers for a sporty chic outfit perfect for a shopping spree at your favorite outdoor mall, or for visiting your local farmers' market.

3. A White Sleeveless Maxi Dress

The good thing about white dresses is that they can make an impact without being complicated. To rock this seasonal staple while still achieving minimalist style, you can opt for a sleeveless maxi dress with clean lines. This one features a sharp square neck that elegantly balances the flowy cut. Pairing it with white pointed-toe heels creates an effortless monochromatic look that is fitting for both casual and formal events.

4. A White Puff Sleeve Maxi Dress

Puff sleeves are always a good idea when it comes to dresses! They are feminine, distinctive and ooze a confident vibe. This white maxi dress is a Summer doozy with statement puff sleeves and a trendy cut-out detail. Pairing it with brown flat sandals makes for an effortless and chic casual outfit that is perfect for Sunday brunch and wine tasting parties. For an elevated look, you could swap the flat sandals with strappy heeled sandals for a wedding-guest-ready dress outfit.

5. A White Slip Dress

Slip dresses were more of a trendy item a few years ago but have evolved to become a year-round closet staple. Slip dresses are usually made of a silk-like fabric which gives them a dressier vibe than cotton or linen dresses. The great thing about slip dresses is that they offer plenty of versatility. You could wear them on their own, or layer them with a blazer, a cardi or a jacket.

This monochrome slip dress outfit with cap-toe shoes and a pearl choker is one that is appropriate for formal events such as a wedding reception, or date night, or even a girl's night out adventure. For more of a casual vibe, you could swap the dressy shoes for flat sandals, and throw on a denim jacket.

6. A White Ruffled Lace Dress

Brides are not the only ones who can indulge in intricate white dresses! Even if you're not headed to the altar during the Summer, you can certainly venture into couture territory with a white dress that's full of sartorial peculiarities.

Broderie anglaise lace patterns, puff sleeves, ruffles, button-down closure, and sash belt all come together on this white dress to give it distinctive style. I wore this custom-ordered piece with black heels as a dressy daytime outfit for a cocktail party. It fitted the mood while creating alluring contrast with the crowd's attires. The benefit of such a dress is that it has enough personality to not require heavy accessorizing. A maximalist style like this one also gives off vintage classic vibes, and is more versatile than we think.

Everyday Smart Outfits to Wear With Loafers This Summer

Denim outfit with brown loafers, Marc Nolan Kennedy pleated suede loafers, Summer street style, how to style loafers, Farotelle blog, Minneapolis top fashion influencer, fashion over 40

If you're into shoes like I am, then you love your boot season, sandal season, and especially loafer season because unlike boots and sandals, loafers are always in season! This shoe style has survived endless cycles of fashion trends, reinvented itself many times over, and continues to be one of the most versatile and timeless pieces one can have in their wardrobe. I love a good pair of loafers and love wearing them in the Winter and Fall, as well as in the Summer. Here is some outfit inspo that will make you appreciate even more just how versatile this style is during the hot season:

Maxi Denim Skirt With A Sleeveless Trench

Whether you're into dressing up or going casual, a pair of loafers will always do the trick. Loafers effortlessly pair with dressy trousers and a blazer for an androgynous vibe, but they also play well with more feminine pieces such as maxi skirts. For an easy downtown look perfect for a coffee break, try a maxi denim skirt with a sleeveless trench jacket and loafers. This combo is truly effortless and even better with neutrals for a safari touch. These brown suede loafers are super comfy, chic, and mind you, they are from the men's department! Make sure you size down for a clean fit.

Denim on Denim With Barrel Jeans

Loafers and jeans go together like bread and butter! For a casual weekend look, I went for a denim on denim outfit with an oversized denim shirt (other option here) and barrel jeans, and added my brown suede loafers. I love when a pair of loafers is unemcumbered by long bottoms so I cuffed my jeans a little! This is a cool modern look that is simple, modest, and very appropriate for Summer daytime feats such as errands, coffee, brunch, or just walking around town. Speaking of walking around town, I love strolling the streets of downtown Saint-Paul during the Spring and Summer!

Skinny Jeans With A Ruffle Blouse

Skinny jeans are back y'all! And I think they look great with loafers. Skinny jeans can be worn in so many different ways, from business professional to athleisure core. For an elevated casual spin on skinny jeans, I like to go for a feminine and dressy blouse that I contrast with classic loafers. This creates tension and gives the look a little more of an edgy, unexpected flair.

Get The Most Out of Your Shopping This Summer With These Tips

Get The Most Out of Your Shopping This Summer With These Tips

Every season is a great opportunity for cleaning up, re-organizing your closet, and maybe do a little shopping to ensure your wardrobe remains aligned with your lifestyle. Shopping for apparel can be a fun undertaking, but it often turns into an overwhelming experience when you consider all the choices that are out there, the different silhouettes, and the ever-changing trends. Having options is a good thing, but too many options can also get in the way of making solid, efficient buying decisions. For example, it's easy to go for that cute white top we stumble on, even when it doesn't really fit our lifestyle, or we just don't have the pieces to style it with. Building an efficient wardrobe requires an intentional approach to purchasing clothing, shoes, and accessories. Wondering where to start? I have done the work on several closet items so you can get more bang for your shopping bucks.

Dresses and Jumpsuits

Spring and Summer dresses, how to shop for Spring and Summer dresses, Building a classic and timeless wardrobe, midi shirt dress, strapless party dress, maxi dresses, utility jumpsuits, mini dresses, Farotelle fashion blog, Minneapolis top fashion content creator

Who doesn't love a good dress or jumpsuit? These one-and-done pieces make getting ready a breeze! But unless you want to overstuff your closet with all the dress cuts and styles that are out there, you need to shop very intentionally. A rule of thumb when investing in your wardrobe is to make sure you can wear the pieces multiple ways for multiple occasions, the ones that fit your lifestyle. As a corporate leader, entrepreneur, content creator, and mom, I like a piece that I can wear to work, to a school meeting, weekend sporting events, Sunday brunch, and dinner too. That's a lot of boxes and checking most of them requires clean and versatile silhouettes. Sheath dresses, sleeveless midi dresses, fit-and-flare dresses, bold maxi dresses, strapless floral dresses, and shirt dresses – among others – are all options. And same on the jumpsuit side, there is a variety of styles and silhouettes to pick from, from structured utility jumpsuits to relaxed wide-leg jumpsuits.

The most versatile picks: go for a clean shirt dress and a wide-leg jumpsuit. A shirt dress is a never-fail closet staple that can be styled for just about every occasion. Going to work? Pair it with a leather belt and leather pumps. For a wedding, add a brooch and dressy sandals. Running errands? Opt for comfy loafers and a large soft tote. You just can't go wrong with a shirt dress! For a modern spin, I recommend looking for updated details such as drop sleeves.

For the jumpsuit, I recommend one in a softer, wide-leg silhouette and a classic top (a jumpsuit like this or this or this). A high neckline will always give a modern and more versatile look that you can style for work, for special occasions, and even for casual outings too.

White Shirts

Spring and Summer white shirts, how to shop for Spring and Summer shirts, Building a classic and timeless wardrobe, classic white shirt, boho style, longline shirts, Farotelle fashion blog, Minneapolis top fashion content creator

Everyone needs a white shirt. Everyone. And the good thing is that there's no shortage of styles to pick from. Whether you're into longer, tunic-lengh white tops, more casual eyelet materials, boho styles, or crisp and classic, you'll have no trouble finding a white shirt. The key is picking the one or ones that you'll be able to pair with most of your closet staples and for multiple occasions.

The most versatile picks: go for a clean, classic, and crisp white shirt in a quality cotton fabric that will be comfortable year-round, and also pick a more relaxed option (other relaxed option here) so you can interchange the two depending on your mood. A crisp white shirt works well for classic workwear, and also elevates casual pieces such as jeans and shorts. The cleaner silhouette is also best for layering under other pieces such as blazers and vests. On the other hand, a more relaxed shirt with a longer hem and wider sleeves lends a contemporary flair to business and weekend looks alike. Think black dressy slacks with a relaxed white shirt to create a chic, balanced outfit you can wear to work and happy hour. A relaxed shirt also works well with jeans and the on-trend fitted capri pants.

Tank tops

Spring and Summer tank tops, how to shop for Spring and Summer tops, Building a classic and timeless wardrobe, fitted tops, halter tops, bodysuits, casual style, Farotelle fashion blog, Minneapolis top fashion content creator

Nothing beats a tank top on a hot Summer day. But just because you're focused on staying cool doesn't mean you can't be chic! Shopping for a tank top can sprawl into many directions: spaguetti straps, halter necklines, open necklines, bodysuits, there are tons of options and in so many color ways.

The most versatile picks: go for a tank top with a high halter neckline and one with an open square neckline (other options here and here). These two options are easy to style with jeans and shorts for casual feats, and also look more structured and put together. Even for work, these styles will pair effortlessly with dressy pants, pumps and a belt. For a cleaner fit, opt for a bodysuit construction.

Pants

Spring and Summer pants and jeans, how to shop for Spring and Summer pants, Building a classic and timeless wardrobe, barrel pants, straight leg jeans, wide-leg pants, cropped pants, women's workwear, Farotelle fashion blog, Minneapolis top fashion content creator

Of all the wardrobe pieces, I think pants are the ones that have undergone the most trend shifts in recent years. We've bounced around skinny and cigarette pants, bell bottoms, wide-leg pants, barrel and balloon silhouettes, and more recently, fitted capri pants. And it's tempting to want to jump on each one of those trends. But maintaining an intentional and capsule wardrobe you can easily pull from requires a more studied approach, one that considers the styling range that each type of pants offers.

The most versatile picks: go for a wide-leg silhouette and a straight-leg pair of pants. I have found those two options to be the most versatile, easy-to-style, and timeless! Timeless is key when you're investing in pieces you want to wear for many years, ones that don't fall in and out of trends but remain relevant regardless of what the fashion editors say. Wide-leg pants are a must-have for Spring and Summer. They look elevated yet breezy and fit well with office outfits and casual looks. Wide-leg pants are my most worn style because they look posh with everything: a tank top, an oversized blazer, or a shirt. And wide-leg pants are also flattering to most body types making them a worthwhile investment. Straight-leg pants have also stood their ground when it comes to timeless style. Straight-leg jeans in particular are super versatile and can be dressed up depending on the wash you go for. The darker the wash, the more places you'll be able to wear your jeans to. When shopping for pants, wide-leg or straight-leg, I strongly recommend a high waist to elongate the legs and give a more elevated allure.

Shoes

Spring and Summer shoes, how to shop for Spring and Summer shoes, Building a classic and timeless wardrobe, low heel kitten pumps, women's loafer shoes, Tony Bianco, M.Gemi heels, Sam Edelman dressy sandals, thong sandals, Farotelle fashion blog, Minneapolis top fashion content creator

If you're like me, you want all the shoes! It is hard for me to decide which ones to get or not get when I'm shopping for shoes. I definitely prioritize comfort but when it comes to styles? Tough choice! Similar to pants, we've seen a lot of trend shifts with shoes in recent years, going from slingbacks to maryjane ballet flats to mesh mules, platforms and others.

The most versatile picks: go for leather pointy pumps, dressy sandals, and something more casual like loafers or low-top sneakers. Pointy pumps go with everything. They give structure and a dressy vibe to all your looks and are truly timeless. Dressy sandals are also good to have in your Spring and Summer arsenal. For both sandals and pumps, a mid heel is sure to provide more comfort and that is not to be overlooked if you want to move around confidently. For weekend or casual activities that require more walking such as errands, a flat option is the way to go. You could go for sneakers or loafers though I'd recommend loafers for their versatility. Those can be dressed up or down and make a better choice if you want to streamline your wardrobe.

This is just scratching the surface of Summer shopping! There are many other categories to explore such as skirts, shorts, tops and others. The goal is not to shop till you drop. It's instead to dial down the over-consumerism and make deliberate, considered, and sustainable buying decisions – because the more streamlined your wardrobe, the easier it is to assemble outfits. Let me know in the comments which category I should do next!
