For those of you who haven’t been following me for long, I grew up in tropical climate. So for the first 17 years of my life, I enjoyed hot and humid weather (almost) year round, wore hot weather clothing, and firmly believed tree leaves were always green.
I came to the US when I was 17 to go to college. I landed here during the winter so you know the shock was big: from hot and humid heat to frigid cold where you couldn’t feel your hands and face. That first winter, I wondered how long I would last in this unfamiliar and ever-changing place. While I was trying to figure it out in my head, spring came, and then summer, and I started to feel like maybe it wasn’t so bad after all. And then it was Fall. And I was wowed. Watching the trees’ foliage change into those beautiful golden colors every day was new and magical! During my first fall, I thought a lot about my grandmothers who never got a chance to experience mother nature at its best! I thought about all the people back in the Ivory Coast and other tropical places who would never get to see this beautiful display of colors. It made me grateful 😔.
Not only did the landscape offer a beautiful view during the season, everyone and especially women and girls seemed to double down on fashion and style! They wore fun sweaters, paraded all kinds of boots, walked around with light jackets, had fun with layering, and above all didn’t seem bothered one bit that the heat wouldn’t be back for another 9 months.
Me, I just felt happy watching nature and people come together in what appeared like a color show! And I gradually joined in. After a few years, Fall became my favorite season too. I looked forward to shopping for sweaters, wearing boots, and layering with jackets!
Needless to say, I accumulated a LOT of sweaters, boots, and cold weather things over the years. So picking the few that I thought were staples was a challenging exercise. But I did it. And I truly believe these 3 items are all you need to infuse some Fall energy into your wardrobe:
1. Brown Boots
Brown boots are Fall’s best friend. They give style, insulation, and colorwise, completely agree with the golden tones of the fall season. I feel like adding them to any outfit instantly turns it into a fall outfit!
2. A Trench Coat
What I love about a trench coat is the versatility that comes with it. Works perfectly to add some polish to your work outfit, but also works wonders with jeans and casual looks. And let’s not forget the moderate insulation it provides during the cooler days!
3. A Wool Scarf
Scarves are my go-to accessory to add warmth to my Fall and Winter outfits. Depending on your color and texture preference, a scarf is an easy way to add a pop of color, or a little bit of texture detail to your day!
