Yes, You Can Wear a Utility Jumpsuit to Work!

I love a jumpsuit. Just like dresses, the one-and-done factor makes them an uncomplicated choice to simplify the getting-ready routine! I have accumulated a number of jumpsuits over the years, most of them utility jumpsuits. Those come in a range of different fabrics and styles, and are versatile pieces that merit a spot in a modern capsule wardrobe. I've worn my utility jumpsuits in various ways, including this jumpsuit casual weekend look. But utility jumpsuits are not just fitting for casual feats. Before we get into how you can wear one to work, let's do a little refresher on what characterizes a utility jumpsuit.

What is a utility jumpsuit?

Fashionably speaking, a utility jumpsuit is a one-piece outfit that draws inspiration from blue-collar workwear. Because they were originally designed to deliver maximum practicality, utility jumpsuits feature utilitarian elements such as numerous pockets and a belted waist. They also typically have an oversized and boxy fit. Those characteristics give utility jumpsuits an industrial feel which is part of their charm. Think of a utility jumpsuit as a fashionable twist on a mechanic's or a utility worker's uniform. Utility jumpsuits are often made of durable woven materials like cotton, denim, or twill. And although they started out in neutral colorways, they have evolved to include many vibrant hues.

Now that we're on the same page on what a utility jumpsuit is, let's talk about whether they are appropriate for work, or should I say for the office  since those jumpsuits originated from blue-collar workwear.

Can you wear a utility jumpsuit to the office?

Before I jump (pun intended!) into this, it's important that we understand the impact the Covid pandemic has had on corporate dress codes. Yes various workplaces, especially Big Tech, had started to embrace more casual work attire but that trend had not permeated all pre-pandemic work environments. Once Covid hit though and office workers started working from home, the workplace dress code loosened up significantly. Pieces like utility jumpsuits that could have been a little to weekend-y became okay to wear to work. And I have to say they are much better than the hoodie! Utility jumpsuits can look office-professional if you pair them with the right pieces to elevate the style.

For this outfit, I opted for black dressy strappy sandals and a structured black leather tote. These simple elements give the outfit a more pulled-together vibe that is on par with pants and a shirt in my opinion. You could even swap the sandals for a pair of pumps to take the look up a notch on the workwear scale. So long story short, yes, you can wear a utility jumpsuit to the office. Whether it's Spring, Summer or Fall, utility jumpsuits deliver the seasonless versatility that makes them a wardrobe staple.
